Who is Emilia Wickstead? Favorite celebrities bring designs to Air NZ

Air New Zealand has revealed that London-based New Zealand designer Emilia Wickstead will design its new uniform.

Wickstead, a favorite of the British royal family and many other celebrities, will take over from Lady Trelise Cooper, who has designed the airline’s uniform since 2011.

So, who is Wickstead, who does she actually wear, and what can airline employees expect from their new uniforms?

Moving from New Zealand to Milan

Wickstead was born in New Zealand.

Her mother, Angela Wickstead, is also a designer. She once told Elle magazine that her first memories were of watching her mother measuring clothes for clients.

When Wickstead was 14, her family moved to one of the fashion capitals of the world, Milan. She then went on to study Fashion Design and Marketing at Central Saint Martins in London.

She launched her own fashion brand in 2008, and was dressing some of the most famous women in the world within just a few years.

One of Wickstead’s most famous and enduring admirers is Catherine, Princess of Wales. The King has been seen in many different Wickstead creations over the years.

Other members of the British royal family also wear Emilia Wickstead’s designs.

Recently, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, wore a floral dress by Emilia Wickstead to a formal event in London, while Princess Beatrice attended Wimbledon this year in a pink dress by Emilia Wickstead.

But it’s not just members of the royal family who turn to Emilia Wickstead’s designs for special occasions – many of the most famous people in the world have worn her designs.

Lady Gaga, Sofia Vergara, Lily James, Melania Trump, Olivia Colman, Ariana Grande, and Gwyneth Paltrow have all worn Wickstead’s designs before.

Paltrow is a huge fan of Wickstead’s work, and her brand Goop collaborated with the designer on a capsule collection earlier this year.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai also wore a custom-made Emilia Wickstead gown and matching veil to the Oscars this year.

Now, Wickstead is turning her attention to Air New Zealand’s new uniforms, which she describes as a “true passion project”.

The initial designs submitted for the uniforms were “innovative and unique, and will set Air New Zealand apart on the global stage”, according to Leanne Geraghty, the company’s chief customer and sales officer.

“(Wickstead) also demonstrated her understanding of the importance of creating functional and comfortable uniforms for our employees,” she said.

Wickstead said the uniforms will be an extension of her design aesthetic, which she describes as having a timeless quality, “with simple yet effective details that add a new modernity and ease.”

Final designs for Air New Zealand’s new livery will be revealed late next year.
