Parisian studio Uchronia has been named Emerging Interior Designer of the Year at the 2023 Dezeen Awards.

The Designers of the Year category rewards the best emerging and established talent in the fields of architecture, interiors and design. It honors those whose innovative work has made a notable impact on the industry.

Uchronia founder, Julien Siban, received the award at the Dezeen Awards 2023 last week, which was hosted in partnership with Bentley.

Uchronia is a Paris-based multidisciplinary design group founded by architect Siban. The studio’s work is characterized by a dynamic interplay of vibrant colours, undulating shapes and playful eclectic designs.

It takes its name from Uchronia, a term coined by the French philosopher Charles Renouvier in the 19th century that symbolizes an ideal or imaginary representation of time.

The studio’s choice of name was intended to reflect its work, which it says embodies “a meditation on imaginative and fleeting time.”

Uchronia specializes in transforming spaces into immersive and experiential environments and provides a range of services including architecture, interior design and visual identity.

She has worked on a range of projects including restaurants, apartments and fashion shows.

Siban received the award at the Dezeen Awards 2023 last week, which was held at Shoreditch Electric Light Station in London and attended by the shortlisted studios alongside past and present judges.

“This studio has made a powerful impact in the four years since its creation,” the judges said. “Her projects have a strong sense of identity, confidently blending contemporary design language with welcome vintage touches.”

“Sipan has consistently applied a playful, lively repertoire of bold colors, striking patterns, amorphous shapes and undulating lines to landmark restaurant projects, as well as residential and retail spaces,” they continued.

Forest Marseille is a coastal restaurant designed to evoke the warmth of the south of France

Uchronia’s projects include Forest Marseille, a waterfront restaurant designed to embody the “warmth and authenticity” of the south of France.

The restaurant is awash in a rich palette of terracotta, ocher and terracotta colours, decorated with lime-infused décor, glazed bricks, olive wood moldings and starfish-shaped wall lights.

The café chain Café Nuances features stunning futuristic interiors

The studio also designed a series of cafés for Parisian coffee roaster Café Nuances, distinguished by their vibrant and futuristic interiors.

Each café has its own distinct identity, but they all share characteristics such as saturated colours, striped shapes, painted shelves and stainless steel tables to create a “dream-like” atmosphere.

Think Pink has introduced a selection of vibrant outdoor furniture with quirky silhouettes

During Paris Design Week 2023, Uchronia took over the orangery and garden at the Hôtel de Sully for the installation Think Pink, which showcased a collection of colorful outdoor furniture with playful silhouettes.

Uchronia competed against four other studios shortlisted for this year’s Emerging Interior Designer category, including London studio Sella Concept and Australian interior design practice YSG.

Designers of the Year were nominated and shortlisted by the Dezeen Awards judges and Dezeen’s editorial team. A total of 31 studios, from 14 countries including South Africa, India, Nigeria and Mexico, were shortlisted for awards in six distinct categories for Designers of the Year.

The winner in each category will be featured in an exclusive video produced by Dezeen and sponsored by Bentley. The videos will be unveiled on Dezeen from November 30 to December 7.
