The Loop, a spacious private home nestled within Bali’s lush nature in Pagangan, is the latest residential project by designer Alexis Dornier – a German-born creative who has lived on the island since 2013. The house, though sculptural, dramatic and sweepingly contemporary, appears in harmony with its context, Through the careful selection of materials by the architects and the low and divided volumes.

Episode: A Home That Inspires and Serves

The project brief was “simple yet profound,” Dornier recalls. Clients explained how they had “lived in boxes” all their lives and were now looking for the opposite. He adds: “I set out to create an architectural masterpiece that defies gravity and captures the human spirit.”

In order to meet the requirements of the brief, the team was also determined to ensure that the surrounding areas of the site were preserved as much as possible. As a result, the house is surrounded by greenery, wrapped in the foliage of the well-worn forest on the plot.

At the same time, the floor plan forming the elegant “8” shape was chosen as optimal to allow the best lighting inside the house and outdoor views from different parts of the house. Since the structure is located on a slope, it is designed to float above the ground and greenery.

The process was not without challenges. “The project presented unique challenges that required innovative solutions,” says Dornier. “Bending two-dimensional materials and solving complex geometric situations required careful planning and collaboration with skilled craftsmen. It was a journey into uncharted territory, pushing the boundaries of architectural possibilities.”

The finished product is attractive and meticulously crafted, using the skills of local artisans, while adding drama to the daily lives of its users. “It is a testament to our commitment as architects to challenge the ordinary and create spaces that inspire and captivate all who encounter them,” Dornier writes.
