When Studio Mackereth was tasked with the challenge of crafting a new building complex mixing artistic and residential uses at 30 Mount Row in central London, the practice’s response sought to balance old and new materiality with sleek contemporary lines. The development, located on the prestigious, heritage-laden Mayfair Street, has been created by property developer Glebe, and includes gallery space on the ground floor and two further ground floors, as well as a series of four boutique apartments above.

30 Mount Row: Studio Mackereth balances old and new

Borrowing the rhythm and lines of neighboring buildings and old Mayfair period properties, Sally Mackereth, founder of Studio Mackereth, and her team worked to integrate the facade of the new building into the streetscape. Meanwhile, behind it, open areas and the ground level extending towards the back allow for spacious, light-filled spaces for exhibition displays.

This part of the building is raised by a folded origami-like bronze roof. This looks like a light pavilion from the back windows of the adjacent buildings, adding architectural interest and playfulness to a previously somewhat conventional scene. Meanwhile, inside, the roof’s sharp angles mean that a column-free space underneath is structurally feasible, capable of accommodating large art pieces and immersive experiences.

Carefully selected materials inside and out, such as hand-crafted dark brick and antique bronze detailing, ensure a tactile quality that helps the property blend naturally into its context. Wooden details and custom cabinetry in the apartments emphasize the luxurious approach, enhanced by the generosity of space (the residences span a total area of approximately 810 square metres), an abundance of natural light, and views of central London.

“Studio Mackereth’s design exceeded our expectations – its classic proportions and understated color palette of bronze and hand-crafted brick not only convinced Westminster and Grosvenor to allow this bold new development in this conservative setting in old Mayfair, but it also has a sense of modernity.” “Building a legacy is something we should be proud of for the future,” said David Phillips, CEO of Glebe Ltd.
