Minnesota’s scariest attraction lies in plain sight

Just in time for Halloween, a new survey says the scariest attraction in all of Minnesota is right there in plain sight!

I’m actually a little surprised by Minnesota’s results in MSN Travel’s survey of the scariest attractions in each state.

While the scariest attraction in many states is something resembling a large bridge (such as the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan) or a natural phenomenon (such as the Deerfield River in Massachusetts), Minnesota’s entry is something entirely man-made. And it has nothing to do with Halloween either.

Not that it’s not terrifying, mind you, but it’s not something you’d encounter in your normal daily comings and goings here in Minnesota, like you might if you had to cross Lone Peak in Big Sky, Montana; Or the US Highway 129 “Tail of the Dragon” in North Carolina, both of which are ranked as the scariest attractions in their state.

But here in Minnesota, our scariest attraction is…the Extreme Swing at Valleyfair. That’s right, it’s a ride at the beloved Minnesota amusement park in Shakopee, in the western Twin Cities metro, about 90 minutes northwest of Rochester. Here’s how MSN Travel Survey describes the Xtreme Swing:

One of the most awe-inspiring thrill rides in the Midwest, Xtreme Swing catapults thrill-seekers above Valleyfair Amusement Park 125 feet (38 m). Flying through the air at 60 mph (97 km/h), passengers will have enough time to soak in the surroundings — from the Minnesota River to other nauseating rides — before being sent back the way they came.

I can’t say I’ve been on an Xtreme Swing before, so I don’t know for sure (and of course, the rides at Valleyfair are closed for the season at the moment) but I almost think some of the coolest things could be the hiking trails along the North Shore The rugged terrain in Minnesota is even scarier – if you get close to the edge, that is. (Much like the rapids at Chimney Lake Park in Wisconsin Dells—the survey’s Wisconsin entry.)

Speaking of attractions (which aren’t as terrifying this time), did you know that this gorgeous castle is actually the most expensive house in Minnesota? Keep scrolling to check it out!
