How the grunge aesthetic stands the test of time

Over time, grunge has come in many guises: soft grunge, glam grunge, glam goth grunge, lumberjack grunge, fantasy grunge, indie grunge, indie grunge, and more. Fashion leaders like Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, and Gigi Hadid frequently wear 90s grunge clothing. But more recently, post-millennials like Jenna Ortega, Willow Smith, and Lily-Rose Depp (like father, like daughter) have added their thoughts to the mix.

“Gen Z has this amazing knack for taking favorite elements from subcultures and aesthetics, and then fusing them together to create something completely new that feels nostalgic to millennials,” Sinclair says. “It brings new flavor to parts of our past that we cherish as our halcyon years.”

The current grunge aesthetic is also somewhat fetishistic, romantic yet sad: mismatched georgette dresses, billowy blouses, long skirts with ruffled edges, hook-and-eye ties, and lingerie-inspired inserts. Torn fabrics that resemble burned surfaces, aggressive tailoring, and seemingly ill-considered cuttings visually depict young people’s feelings of frustration and anger toward lawmakers. “We’re seeing new iterations of horrific outfits, but they look more exciting,” Sinclair adds. “But it’s not about sex. It’s about ownership of one’s body.”

We also lean toward colors that reflect our connection to nature and our gratitude for the imperfect beauty we all embody. Muddy pastel watercolor picture: misty violet, faded fennel, pink frowning room, and ‘pond’. Some brands that have mastered the horrific teen angst trend include Blumarine, No/Faith Studios, and Red September.

Grunge is here to stay, at least for now: “We’re seeing a huge creative explosion coming from artificial intelligence where we’ll see grunge take on a more fantastical look that draws on otherworldly inspirations,” says Sinclair. “We’re starting to see this animalistic approach to it, a return to glamorous design.”

As fashion trends ebb and flow, grunge remains timeless, organically adapting to the times while maintaining its essential essence – proving that, like its wearer, it thrives in the craft of reinvention.
