Henning Larsen unveils the design of the world’s largest timber logistics centre

Danish architecture studio Henning Larsen has unveiled plans to create a timber logistics center on the island of Flevopolder in the Netherlands, which will be the largest of its kind in the world.

The 155,000 square meter centre, designed by Henning Larsen, will contain offices, bus storage and a platform transfer service, as well as a restaurant and a rooftop garden.

The Western Logistics Center is expected to be completed by 2026, largely from glued laminated timber (glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT) along with other biomaterials.

Internally, the timber structure will feature oversized columns and exposed beams complemented by light-coloured flooring and furniture. Externally, the facade will be divided by harmonious timber fins and regular openings.

The building will be surrounded by wetland and forest habitats with a 30,000 square meter meadow laid out on its roof to increase biodiversity on the site.

Planting beds, fruit trees and shrubs on the roof of the building will provide green outdoor space for employees, as well as attracting native species.

The boardwalk will serve as a scenic route through the wetlands, while providing educational tools for employees, promoting the integration of nature into the workplace.

With just over 40% of the site dedicated to green space, access to certain areas of the site will be restricted to reduce human impact and promote wildlife growth.

According to the studio, the project’s biodiversity will absorb carbon dioxide, filter air pollutants, and mitigate heat absorption to create a “more comfortable and sustainable environment.”

Rainwater will be collected from the roof and stored for sustainable reuse around the building.

According to the studio, the project will be the largest lumber logistics center in the world. The design aims to create an atmosphere that prioritizes employee well-being by integrating nature into the workplace. Natural light, greenery and clean air will “energize the space and enhance focus.”

Henning Larsen is a global architecture, landscape and urbanism studio. Other projects the studio is scheduled to complete include a ferry terminal in the Faroe Islands based on traditional Viking boats and a wooden ├śrestad church with trapezoidal roofs.
