Frank Gehry frames Battersea Power Station with residential blocks
Crispy white facades punctured by large windows define the Prospect Place housing development completed by Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry at Battersea Power Station in London.
The scheme, which is the Canadian-American architect’s first residential project in the UK, contains two buildings totaling more than 300 homes.
Gehry designed Prospect Place with his eponymous studio Gehry Partners as part of the refurbishment of the famous Battersea Power Station designed by Giles Gilbert Scott on the banks of the River Thames.
Along with residences, it also includes a mix of retail units and a private park called Prospect Park.
According to Gehry, the development was intended to be read independently while also framing and connecting to Battersea Power Station.
“I love London,” said Jerry. “It has culture, history and diversity, and the buildings we have created at Battersea Power Station are designed to stand artistically on their own amidst it all, while also forming a globally recognized icon.”
Gerry added: “It is important that we create social places for future generations, and our aim from the beginning was to create a neighborhood that connects with the historic fabric of London, but also has its own identity and integrity.”
The opening of Prospect Place comes ahead of the opening of the refurbished power station by WilkinsonEyre, which is expected to be completed in September and will include a glass elevator inside one of its chimneys.
The two buildings feature 308 homes that vary in size, ranging from studio apartments, one-bedroom apartments, townhouses and four-bedroom penthouses.
Gehry Partners’ design for each apartment is also different, meaning no two homes are the same. However, each one features an open plan layout, access to either a conservatory or a terrace, and city views.
Externally, the two buildings are distinguished by their white, sculptural facades with an undulating effect, punctuated by large windows.
This creates a contrast with the uniform and industrial architecture of the adjacent power station, clearly distinguishing between old and new.
Inside, the apartments are finished with two London and Los Angeles nameplates, developed by Gehry Partners.
The London palette consists of metallic and texture-rich finishes meant to offer an industrial look, while the Los Angeles version uses light wood finishes and a light color scheme.
At street level, the two buildings are complemented by double-height retail units. These are linked by a pedestrian walkway through the development, which will eventually lead to a new main thoroughfare for the wider area called Electric Boulevard.
Nestled between the two buildings is Prospect Park, which has been designed for residents by LDA Design – the designers behind the landscape at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
The completion of Prospect Place marks a major milestone in the long-awaited refurbishment of the Grade II* listed Battersea Power Station.
It is located to the south of the former station, alongside an adjacent building designed by British studio Foster + Partners called Battersea Roof Gardens.
Battersea Roof Gardens will include public facilities including roof gardens, a hotel and open work spaces for Prospect Place residents, along with more apartments and retail facilities.
The rooftop gardens will be developed by garden designer LDA Design but in collaboration with landscape architect James Corner, who created the New York High Line.
Earlier this year, the lead architect on the restoration project, Wilkinson Eyre, revealed images of the chimney lift for Battersea Power Station.
This tourist attraction will rise through the power station’s north-western chimney and will provide visitors with 360-degree views of the city of London at a height of 109 meters above the ground.
