“It is not just the design and color of the floor covering that must be considered when selecting a rug, the size, shape and placement of the rug in any room can have a huge impact on the overall aesthetic of a space, especially in the bedroom.” Daniel Prendergast, Design Director at Iconic Rugs, agrees.
Sarah Link, head of marketing at La Redoute, agrees, “We know that for many homes choosing the perfect rug for your bedroom can be difficult, and size is a really big factor when it comes to the final decision.”
“If the rug is too small, your sleeping space will feel cramped, while if the rug is too big it will eventually take over.”

How to choose the right size rug for your bedroom
“When choosing the right rug size, focus on the size of your bed,” begins an expert at Ruggable. ‘Putting a large rug under the bed is most common, and it becomes the focal point of the room.’ The rug should be big enough for night tables to sit on.”
“We recommend giving your rug about two feet (60 cm) on all sides of the bed, leaving neat borders of visible floor space without the rug looking like an island,” advises Sarah.
“For a double bed,” she continues, “a 6′ x 9′ (185 x 275 cm) rug will fit perfectly in your sleeping space, along with any side tables or footstool.”
On the other hand, “For homes that have a king-size bed in their bedroom, choosing a larger rug, which is about 9 by 12 feet (275 by 365 cm), will ensure that it matches your furniture and space.”

Alternatively, another option for placing your bedroom rug is under the bed, with the bottom third of the bed resting on the rug, but nothing else.
Explains an expert at Ruggable, ‘With this layout option, the rug is not placed under the bedside tables but in front of them. There should always be a small gap (about 20cm) of visible floor space between the front of the bedside tables and the start of the rug on the floor.’
They continue: “In terms of width, the rug should line up with the outer edges of the bedside table on both sides – if the edge of the rug ends in the middle of the bedside tables, it is not wide enough and will look out of place.” .’
