7 exterior wall decorating ideas to beautify your space

Your outdoor space is an extension of your home, so don’t be afraid to decorate the exterior walls the same way you decorate the interior walls. Whether it’s a welcome sign on your front porch or a feature wall behind a cozy hangout on the patio, there are many ways to incorporate wall decor into your outdoor spaces.

Before you start decorating, think about how you want the space to feel. If you want to add greenery to your yard, try adding a feature wall of mounted planters. If your deck is often used for tailgate parties and backyard barbecues, choose temporary seasonal decor that can be easily set up and taken down. Below, we’ve rounded up our favorite outdoor wall decor ideas to help you personalize your outdoor space.

1. Seasonal yard decor

Transform your back porch into a tropical summer oasis with an array of faux palm leaves. A variety of plastic leaves will make your outdoor area feel like a vacation, even if you’re in the middle of the suburbs. Add some potted plants and comfy seating to complete the look, and don’t forget the spa water!

2. Front porch wall decor

Seasonal wreaths and doormats aren’t the only way to greet guests at the end of the walkway. This colorful wood panel turns functional front porch elements, like a mailbox and lighting, into statement art. To make your own, attach a candlestick, mailbox and planter to a colorful plaque or painting, then hang them on your porch wall. If you don’t have a mailbox on your front porch, you can replace it with a chalkboard sign to display welcome greetings instead.

3. Temporary outdoor decoration

Exterior decorations don’t have to be permanent, especially if they’re not weatherproof. Before your next burger party, decorate your deck or patio wall with a seasonal banner that can be easily hung from small wall-mounted hooks. If you entertain a lot, consider hiding permanent hooks behind a pair of light fixtures to make decorating easier. Hang your favorite football team’s colors during tailgate season, or alternate seasonal designs while hosting year-round meets.

4. DIY plant wall

Think outside the traditional accessories when it comes to exterior wall decor. Fence your outdoor patio space with a variety of live plants to create one large focal piece. It’s an easy way to add greenery if you don’t have a large yard, and it also adds color to what can be a boring, blank wall.

5. Wooden front porch sign

Decorate your front porch with a great welcome sign. It’s an easy way to decorate a large space with simple sides, and you can customize it however you like. Use paint and stencils to add your last name, house number, or seasonal greeting to a blank wooden plaque that can be hung above a cozy seating area.

6. External mirror

In the same way that you use a mirror to make an indoor space appear larger, you can use a mirror to make a small outdoor patio or covered porch less cramped. Like any other item intended for indoor use, you’ll want to make sure you hang the mirror in a covered area to avoid damage from the elements. Or look for a mirror designed specifically for outdoor use.

7. External pegboard

Although your outdoor space should feel like a part of your home, it often requires items and supplies that are not used indoors. Create storage space for your outdoor entertaining essentials that can be used as beautiful wall decor. A pegboard with shelves is the perfect place to store colorful drinkware, and a large serving bowl or patterned tray serves as a centerpiece. Place some small plants or succulents on the shelves to add more color and tie in the display with the surrounding greenery.
