Zen Spaces, India

Presented by Sanjay Puri Architects Zen spaces, a 4-storey house of 27,000 sq. ft. located in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. Blurring the lines between inside and outside, Zen Spaces integrate with the existing landscape, screening and allowing filtered light in different ways within each space, infusing volumes with light and shadows to shift differently at different times.

Situated on a relatively large plot of land, with an existing house on the south side, the clients wanted a new home as the family had grown. Keeping most of the existing garden as a shared space for both houses, the new house was built at the northernmost end, with roads on 3 sides. All existing trees on the site were retained, with the new house remaining in the clear space between them.

The house is a composition of cubic volumes interspersed with an open courtyard, built on 4 levels to accommodate three generations living together.

The underground floor, naturally lit by a sunken courtyard, houses a large lounge, gym and service areas. The ground floor and first floor contain living and dining spaces, and three bedrooms and a small lounge are located on each floor. The second floor has a multi-purpose room that opens onto a large north-facing terrace.

The spine inside the house revolves around the courtyard, allowing visual connection to the natural spaces while moving inside the house.

Every part of the house is naturally lit, with diffused indirect sunlight filtering through the interior. Jaipur city has 8 months of summer with temperatures above 35°C, and 4 months of winter with average temperatures between 12-21°C.

The house is interspersed with a winter deck on the south side facing the large garden and a longitudinal summer deck facing the main living and dining spaces at the north end. The two floors provide sheltered outdoor seating, which can be used year-round for family gatherings.

In addition, each room opens onto its own outdoor deck, balcony or terrace, creating individual open spaces for everyone in the house. These exterior surfaces act as a shelter from excess heat in the summer months, while keeping interior spaces cool. The summer decks overlook the large garden, while the winter decks overlook the large trees, with each of the individual floors of the room opening onto a mixture of bamboo and other trees.

To reduce heat gain in the summer months, and to provide privacy and reduce noise from the arterial road of the house facades at the same time, a series of GFRC screens cover the east, west and south sides, with the north side being more open. These screens refer to the stone screens of the traditional architecture of Jaipur and Rajasthan.

The house has a simple RCC frame structure, with all walls made of fly ash bricks, including water recycling, rainwater harvesting, and a solar water heating system. The house was built by local contract workers from the surrounding area, and most of the materials used in its construction were purchased within a 100-kilometre radius. Every part of the house is naturally ventilated, and the courtyard contributes to passive cooling.

The interior palette is mostly neutral in shades of grey, with artistic accents and furniture. 80% of the furniture is custom-crafted on site by local carpenters, and is made from Endwood, an environmentally friendly alternative to rice husk wood. Limestone plaster from local craftsmen is used on all walls, reducing the use of cement to a minimum.

In most areas of the house, the ceiling is left as exposed concrete. A small prayer room forms a focal point along the spine of the circulatory system. This room, called the ‘Puja room’, is a small temple inside the house, and an essential part of most Indian homes. Since all Hindu temples have a bell at the entrance, the home’s prayer room is decorated with a series of small bells in concentric circles of decreasing height, forming a dome shape that echoes the traditional temple.

There are varying degrees of transparency throughout the interior spaces, where the living, lounge, dining, outdoor and circulation spaces are all seamlessly integrated. The spaces are visible to an extent that allows for a more spatial experience, while at the same time enjoying privacy. At night, the house is illuminated in sections, displaying its solid and perforated volumes juxtaposed together in a sculptural way. The design of the house with its courtyard, screens, indirect natural light and complete natural ventilation makes it very energy efficient.

Given the location of the site and the climate of the area, Zen Spaces is a home that offers different experiences in each of its parts, seamlessly interspersed with nature.
