China Pavilion plan for Expo Osaka 2025: A display of traditional Chinese engravings
Interplay has just revealed the design of the Poland Pavilion at the World Expo in Osaka, Kansai. The project, commissioned by the Polish Investment and Trade Agency, responds to the theme of the upcoming exhibition, “Designing the future society for our lives.” The Polish Pavilion was born out of the studio’s fascination with spirals, specifically the use of form at different scales, from “protein molecules to the structure of galaxies.” Considered a symbol of Polish creativity, the pavilion with geometric patterns aims to expand its influence beyond national borders.

The geometric design symbolizes the essence of Polish identity and aims to highlight the culture’s innovative spirit. The pavilion attempts to show the idea that innovation is not limited to the region. In fact, designers believe that ideas can spread far and wide, transcend borders, and stimulate conversations far and wide about the knowledge they have found.
With the aim of enriching the nation with knowledge, the effects of geometric form are evident through dynamic spiral walls at different heights. A different scale of vortex is detected from each observation point, allowing distances closer to the human body to be measured at lower altitudes. At the heart of the project is a central concert hall that symbolizes the power of culture. The project’s exterior is filled with the art of standard Japanese woodwork, a tribute to tradition. Repeating a simple element in a modular design allows for optimization of the construction process.

Wood was chosen as the primary construction material for the project due to its environmentally friendly nature and lower carbon footprint compared to concrete and steel. Furthermore, the design adheres to Expo 2025 guidelines, using natural materials such as wood fiber insulation and recycled finishes. In addition, the spiral shape responds to the challenging site conditions, as it is located on an artificial island and is exposed to wind and earthquake forces. The structure is designed to withstand wind and earthquake loads due to the inherent stability of the curved walls, providing structural integrity.
The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) announced earlier this year that the Japanese city of Osaka had won the bid to host the 2025 World Expo, which is expected to attract millions of visitors to the city. Many other countries revealed their designs for the upcoming exhibition. Apropos Architects has won the competition to design the Czech Republic’s pavilion at Expo 2025, which will explore movement and spirituality in space. Finally, the China Pavilion announced its display, “Embossed Slips from China,” designed by China Architectural Design Group (CADG).
