MPavilion 10 designed by Tadao Ando opens in Melbourne
The 10th edition of the MPavilion has opened at Queen Victoria Gardens in Melbourne, Australia. Designed by Tadao Ando, this is the architect’s first project in Australia. The pavilion reflects its distinctive use of geometric shapes harmonious with the landscape and careful use of exposed concrete. The official opening showcased the space with a public celebration, including an extensive collection of artwork selected by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation. The MPavilion will remain open to the public for free until March 28, 2024, and invites visitors to participate in its diverse cultural programme.

Located in the Melbourne Botanic Gardens, the MPavilion is a platform for experimentation and innovation. For this tenth edition, Tadao Ando designed a wide roof composed of an aluminum-coated disc 14.4 meters long, supported by a central column. The central structure is surrounded by concrete walls of varying lengths, creating a partially enclosed space that evokes the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese garden. Inside, half the space is occupied by a reflecting pool that reflects the pavilion’s ceiling and the sky above. Openings in the south and north walls provide panoramic views of Melbourne and the surrounding park areas.

The pavilion’s tranquil atmosphere is enriched by a series of art projects aimed at encouraging visitors to integrate into the city’s cultural landscape. During the opening weekend, visitors will have the opportunity to borrow unique quilts created as part of the MPavilion Quilt Challenge, with each design inspired by elements of Ando’s architecture. Inside the pavilion, the artwork “Scala de Cinzas (Greyscale)” by João Loureiro invites you to experience the “taste of gray ice cream”. In addition, a carefully selected group of artists, architects and creatives will be recruited to contribute various interventions and installations, ranging from the MPavilion 10 chair, designed by Davidov Architects, to DNJ Paper’s “samue”, a stylish Japanese version of a business jacket intended for MPavilion attendees. all over the world. the chapter.
It is an honor to complete my first project in Australia and create a living work of architecture that will play an important role in the cultural life of Melbourne this summer. I hope that when you visit, you will allow this space to enter your hearts and that your senses will be attuned to the light and breeze interacting with them and this space. I wish them to experience harmony with nature, with themselves and with others. – Tadao Ando, MPavillion 10 engineer
