AUNA Restaurant / MRD Arquitectos

Textual description provided by the architects. From Onar comes this concept, which is a space designed to gather, communicate, enjoy and live unforgettable moments. The collaboration and empathy between architecture and gastronomy have been born intangibly since its conception, representing shared values; Countryside, honesty, modesty, simplicity of raw materials, craftsmanship and the warmth of home. Local integration and global cohesion suggest the luxury of spatial quality and the atmosphere it provides. A space free of unnecessary pretenses, decorations and coatings. The project was a collaboration between architects, designers, landscapers, illuminators, artists, craftsmen, chefs, potters and photographers, all of Mexican origin.

Meanwhile, all materials, furniture, accessories, arts and decor are also manufactured in Mexico. We want to achieve a sense of refuge that takes you to this oasis amidst the chaos and active life of CDMX. The honesty in its operations leads us to see at all times the storage and preparation of food at different stations deliberately reflected in its design. Converting an existing house with an uneven courtyard with irregular shapes and very little natural light was among the challenges. From the street, you are greeted by a path lined with plants and a wooden pergola that escorts you to the main lobby, a space where you can enjoy the space as more than just passing through, the furniture, the music, its scent, and the selection of art make this a powerfully welcoming space.

The access rooms are part of this wonderful corridor that through the roof has created heavenly entrances of natural light combined with a very interesting proposal for landscaping and interior design. The main hall has a nod to the Mexican palace, everything revolves around a small but majestic central courtyard that celebrates the changing nature and brings together seasonal produce for its culinary suggestion. The courtyard contains volcanic rocks, and its facades consist of iron windows and a clay roof. Natural light was no exception, captured by its panels, so two lightweight pine slanted shades were designed to allow light to pass through naturally and gently illuminate the space. The project continues towards the terrace, an open space, which is the backyard of the house, and the gastronomic magic happens, the open kitchen and the smokehouse form part of an experience that is integrated as main players in the design.
